The symptoms of diabetes can vary depending on the type of diabetes and how long you’ve had it. Some common symptoms include:

  • Increased thirst: You may feel constantly thirsty and drink more fluids than usual.
  • Frequent urination: You may need to urinate more often, especially at night.
  • Fatigue: You may feel more tired than usual, even after getting enough sleep.
  • Blurred vision: Changes in blood sugar levels can affect your vision.
  • Unexplained weight loss: Even if you’re eating normally, you may lose weight without trying.
  • Slow-healing sores: Cuts and scrapes may take longer to heal.
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet: This can be a sign of nerve damage.
Risk Factors for Diabetes

Recognizing the Risks

Several factors can increase your risk of developing diabetes, including:

  • Family history: If you have a parent, sibling, or child with diabetes, you’re more likely to develop it yourself.
  • Age: The risk of diabetes increases as you get older.
  • Overweight or obesity: Carrying extra weight, especially around your waist, can increase your risk.
  • Physical inactivity: Not getting enough exercise can increase your risk.
  • Gestational diabetes: If you developed diabetes during pregnancy, you’re at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): This hormonal disorder can increase your risk of type 2 diabetes.
  • Prediabetes: If you have prediabetes, your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed with diabetes. People with prediabetes are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Type Of Diabetes

Diabetes is a serious condition that can lead to a number of health problems, including heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and blindness. However, diabetes can be managed with a healthy diet, regular exercise, and medication.

Type 1

Type 1

This type is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. In type 1 diabetes, the body's immune system attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps the body use glucose for energy. Without insulin, glucose builds up in the blood, leading to high blood sugar levels.

Type 2

Type 2

This type is the most common type of diabetes. It is usually diagnosed in adults, but it can also occur in children and adolescents. In type 2 diabetes, the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or can't use insulin properly. This is known as insulin resistance. As a result, glucose builds up in the blood.

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational Diabetes

This type of diabetes develops in some women during pregnancy. It usually goes away after pregnancy, but it increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. Gestational diabetes can cause complications for both the mother and the baby.
