Program Activities in Africa and Accomplishments

In 2002, AWCD collaborated with Hetta International Company, a USA based development organization, to implement an HIV/AIDS prevention program in Oben Oil Field communities in Edo State, Nigeria. With financial assistance provided by Hetta International Company, AWCD increased the knowledge of about 3,000 youths and adults in the Oben communities on HIV/AIDS/STDs and safer sex education. As a result, the program helped to reduce the rate of infection and level of ignorance among the people, and has also empowered the communities to design and manage prevention, care, and counseling programs.

In 2002/03, AWCD collaborated with the Center for Youth in Sustainable Development (CEYSUD), a nonprofit organization based in Nairobi, Kenya, to conduct a needs assessment for the implementation of an HIV/AIDS prevention campaign in the Thika District of Kenya. The total population of the district was 125,000, of which approximately 60,000 rural women and men, and secondary school students, would directly benefit from the project.

In conjunction with Hetta International Company, AWCD conducted a feasibility study on a short-term agricultural training project to be sponsored by UNDP in Ondo State, Nigeria. Approximately 300 women farmers have been scheduled for training in textile technology, yogurt processing, and fruit juice processing. The women trainees, after completing their training, would be able to sell their products in the local markets to generate income to support their families.

The above-mentioned plans intend to benefit around 100,000 individuals and more than half of the beneficiaries are women and children.
