Campaigned Against Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is a violent behavior committed by one intimate partner against another. The violence can be physical, sexual or psychological with the primary purpose to control or dominate or hurt another within the relationship. Primarily, women are the victims of domestic violence and children become the victims when they observe a parent being abused. Domestic violence occurs at all levels of society, in all classes and communities, regardless of social, economic, or cultural backgrounds. However, the problem is more serious in typical low income immigrant families where most women depend on their spouses for economic survival. AWCD conducted a workshop on the impact of domestic violence on poor families and how such abuses can be prevented. Some experts from New York Mayor’s office, were invited to make a presentation to the audience. The conference took place on November 18, 2002 at GFI Services, 208 W. 30th Street, New York, NY 10001. About thirty participants attended the workshop. The workshop showed the role individuals, especially men, can play to alleviate domestic violence. NGO officials were also encouraged to develop more programs to reach out to the families where domestic violence is present. AWCD plans to devote much time and resources to this problem in the future.
