After-School Program

In 2003 and 2005, AWCD conducted a feasibility study and submitted a proposal on After-School-Tutorial-Program to assist children from low income Hispanic and African-American families in South Phoenix School District of Arizona and the Bronx Community in New York City. The goal of the program was to increase educational services to the children of the disadvantaged minority families struggling with poverty, social isolation, and limited educational opportunities.

The proposals aim at helping school children from K1-12 who has problems with reading, mathematics, and science. In addition, the program aims to ensure access to high-quality educational programs, particularly an after-school mentoring and youth development program designed to prevent substance abuse among the youth. The program also aims at providing youth with not only academic success, but also with alternative activities to crimes, drugs, and gangs through participation in educational improvement and career counseling. Finally, program services include, but not be limited to, career readiness training, academic enhancement, leadership development training, and counseling/support services.

Some of the specific services proposed in the proposals included the followings:

  • Provide after-school mentoring and tutorial services in reading and mathematics to keep minority kids and youths on track towards academic excellence and accomplishment
  • Provide training and technical assistance to participating youth and adults in career and job search assistance. Participants desiring to work will be taught how to write resumes and do job interviewing techniques.
  • Provide free counseling to youth on substance abuse problems and techniques for tackling conflict resolution and non-violence skills; prejudice reduction and awareness.
  • Other services to be provided include tutorial, GED, preparations for college and university admissions, computer literacy, language proficiency.

The implementation of the project is pending funding from supporters.
