About the Organization

The Agency for Women and Child Development (AWCD), founded in 1997, is a non-governmental and nonprofit charitable organization incorporated in the State of Arizona and tax-exempt under the provisions of section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code. AWCD is dedicated to helping economically disadvantaged women, children, and families in need of healthcare, basic education, functional literacy, HIV/AIDS prevention education, small business, family planning education, and other basic needs.

Studies show that women play a critical role in sustainable development and constitute about one-third of the labor force in many societies. For example, in the developing countries, women produce, process, and market more than two-thirds of food crops. Women also have the primary responsibility for the care of their children. Many economic disadvantaged households are headed by women, and, in most cases, women raise their children mostly out of their own means. Unfortunately, women’s contributions to socio-economic development are not adequately recognized in some communities. Most women are still marginalized as majority of them still suffer from illiteracy, inadequate healthcare, lack of job skills, domestic violence, trafficking in women, and abject poverty. At AWCD, we are committed to assisting disadvantaged women to empower themselves.

As an international organization, AWCD is a unique organization because it works directly with grassroots communities to improve the quality of life for women and children. It also works very closely with other NGOs, bilateral organizations, federal and state departments of health and education, and private sectors in developing strategies, planning, and raising funds to reduce poverty and to impact the most needed elements of the rural communities.
